The School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences
In 1955, two graduate students joined the 135 medical students who enrolled in the Medical Center's initial classes. But while the medical curriculum moved to Jackson, graduate programs would remain in Oxford on the University of Mississippi campus for decades.
It was not until 2001 that many Medical Center graduate programs were consolidated under the UMMC School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences.
The School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences, has a clearly -defined mission to train the next generation of biomedical researchers and educators. Offering 13 educational programs, and an active and diverse graduate community including approximately 300 students and post-doctoral trainees, the Graduate Schools boasts more than 200 graduate faculty. Their faculty are involved in groundbreaking research in basic and clinical sciences of human diseases such as Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular and renal diseases, cancer, dementia, obesity, diabetes, and infectious disease, our students are prepared for challenging and rewarding careers. Graduates of our programs have become successful researchers in both the public and private sectors, leaders in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, and distinguished educators across the country.
The School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences values community, integrity, professionalism, and excellence. The school's diverse offerings reflect the foundational commitment of UMMC to medical research and advancements in health science.
Its main graduate offices are located adjacent to the main Portrait Gallery, where a portrait of the school's inagural dean, Dr. Ing Kang Ho, is displayed.
